Marie Kondo is a 34-year old Japanese celebrity tidying consultant and author of the internationally best-selling book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. She coined the KonMari Method, which encourages tidying items by category and keeping only those that “spark joy.” Her method is partly inspired by traditional Japanese Shinto religion. Cleaning is a spiritual practice of Shintoism, relating to energy and the way of living.
On January 1, Netflix released an eight-episode series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo where Kondo visits various American homes and provides guidance using her KonMari method. Her method has gone viral with many people and celebrities, such as Jennifer Garner and Mindy Kaling, adapting the method and sharing stories of organization on social media. Thrift stores even confirmed donations have increased, though no solid correlation has been confirmed.
