Chaotic Tax Season Ahead: Many IRS Workers Did Not Report To Work

2019 could be the most chaotic tax season in decades.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration ordered 46,000 IRS employees back to work without pay. That included 26,000 workers recalled to ensure tax refunds would be paid on time and calls answered.

Unfortunately, only 12,000 of those IRS workers reported to work. As a result, 5 million written correspondences have gone unanswered. Only 18% of calls reached a live representative.

Despite Trump’s deal to reopen the government, IRS workers are ignoring the recall. About 9,000 workers could not be reached and 5,000 claimed a hardship exemption. House Democrats were considering introducing a proposal to extend Tax Day beyond the standard date, April 15, however, IRS officials claimed this may create even more chaos due to their systems not being able to handle the change.
