CDC Cautions Against Snuggling Hedgehogs

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is cautioning against PDA with pet hedgehogs. According to an ongoing investigation, the CDC believes hedgehogs are to blame for a multistate salmonella outbreak. Since October 2018, 11 individuals were infected in 8 states and 1 person hospitalized.

Salmonella symptoms include fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps lasting anywhere from 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, there are rare cases where it could result in death if not treated properly.

The CDC advises:

  1. Keep snuggling to a minimum
  2. Wash your hands after handling
  3. Keep the cute, but prickly animals away from food preparation areas.
