Apple Buys “Hello Barbie” Voice Tech Startup, PullString

Hey Siri, say “Hello Barbie”.

Apple acquired the voice tech startup, PullString, behind the “Hello Barbie” doll released in 2015. Previously known as ToyTalk, the startup was founded in 2011 by former Pixar employees. The company’s AI tech provides partners and clients a way to create voice apps and characters to match. They recently launched a software that creates Alexa apps.

Show me the money: $30 million upfront with $10 million promised in potential earn-outs for management. Hello, pricey.

The acquisition wasn’t officially announced, so we don’t have word on Apple’s plans. Perhaps we can make our own Siri apps or Siri-powered toys?
