Deer Disease Turns Animals into Zombies

The chronic wasting disease (CWD) attacks tissues in the brain and spinal cord, causing:

  • extreme weight loss
  • coordination loss
  • listlessness
  • drooling
  • excessive thirst or urination
  • intense aggression before the victim dies

Google search: zombie symptoms

This “zombie” disease affects deer, elk, and moose across 24 American states and two Canadian provinces. For now.

People who eat deer meat could be at risk of contracting the infectious disease since up to 15,000 infected animals are eaten each year. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that research shows CWD can be transferred to other animals.

The disease is compared to the “mad cow” epidemic where 177 people in the U.K. died between 1986 and 2014.
