FDA Finds Cancer-Causing Toxin In Recalled Blood Pressure Pills

The FDA discovered a third cancer-causing toxin.

On Friday, U.S. health regulators discovered another cancer-causing toxin, N-Nitroso-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid (NMBA). 87 units of Hetero Labs Ltd.’s losartan potassium pills, made to treat blood pressure, were recalled.

The recall is part of a global pull of commonly used drugs that contain unacceptable amounts of NMBA, and others tainted with two probable carcinogens: N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).

The FDA is currently developing testing methods to detect cancer-causing impurities.
