Last week, Spotify filed an antitrust complaint with the European Union, accusing Apple of an unfair advantage in the market, specifically the 30% Apple charges App Store developers for subscriptions. Spotify can’t match the price of Apple Music due to the 30% cut it needs to pay Apple. Spotify launched a website explaining their timeline of frustration.
Saying Spotify “wants all the benefits of a free app without being free.” Spotify also purposely left out the fact that Apple’s 30% cut drops to 15% after a year and very few subscribers sign up via the App Store.
Spotify calls Apple a monopolist
And reiterated their point, “This is evident in Apple’s belief that Spotify’s users on iOS are Apple customers and not Spotify customers, which goes to the very heart of the issue with Apple.”
